How Does a Whole-Home Water Softener Work?

Most water softeners remove calcium, magnesium, and other hardness minerals from water using ion exchange. Each system uses a tank filled with negatively charged resin beads. When hard water flows through the tank, these beads attract and retain positively charged minerals like a magnet, so the water leaving the system is softened.

To keep the system working properly, the resin beads need to be recharged with salt. During this regeneration cycle, the softener rinses the beads with saltwater, which releases the trapped minerals. The saltwater and mineral buildup are then flushed out through the home’s drainage system as regular wastewater.

Does Cedar Rapids Have Hard Water?

Hard water is a common issue in Eastern Iowa due to its groundwater, which contains high levels of dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. Over time, this can lead to a variety of issues, including frequent drain clogs and leaks, stains on appliances and dishes, stiff laundry, plumbing damage, and low water pressure.

The City of Cedar Rapids treats its drinking water using a lime softening process. However, this does not completely eliminate all minerals that can cause scale, spots, or dry skin. Homes can still experience moderate hardness, especially if water picks up additional minerals from water lines or well water sources.

Investing in a home water softener can provide an additional layer of protection by removing hardness minerals, protecting pipes, and preventing scale buildup in appliances. Softening can also help with iron, manganese, or sediment issues if the system includes supplemental filtration options

Our team can test your household water, measure residual hardness, and recommend a suitable water softener size and type for your needs and goals. From the initial assessment to the final setup, we handle the entire installation process to configure your system for reliable performance.

What Size Water Softener Is Best for My Home?

Choosing the right water softener size is key to maintaining effectiveness without wasting salt or water. Our highly trained professionals can help by:

  • Testing your water hardness. We can measure the remaining minerals in your water to calculate how much softening is needed.
  • Calculating household water use. We can recommend an appropriate size based on household occupancy and daily water-using appliances.
  • Installing and configuring the system. We can make sure your softening system is correctly installed for consistent performance.

Professional sizing and installation are important to avoid overpaying for an oversized system or dealing with an undersized unit that can’t keep up with daily water use. We conduct comprehensive load calculations to understand your precise water needs and help you find the best fit for your household.

Where Are Water Softeners Commonly Installed?

Most water softeners are installed near the main water line entry to treat water before it reaches faucets and appliances, such as in basements, utility rooms, or garages. We can inspect your property and evaluate drains, electric outlets, and overall accessibility to determine the best location for your new unit.
